Weather Update: Temporary Relief from Cold and Fog in Uttar Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has announced that Uttar Pradesh will see temporary relief from cold and dense fog between January 9 and 11, 2026, due to an active western disturbance. While western regions may benefit more, eastern areas could still experience fog. Temperatures are expected to range from 8-11°C at night to 20-22°C during the day, with possible light rain or hail. However, the IMD warns that cold and fog conditions may return after January 11. Precautions for travelers and farmers are advised to mitigate the impact of weather changes.

Weather Update: Temporary Relief from Cold and Fog in Uttar Pradesh

Weather Forecast for Uttar Pradesh

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience some relief from cold and dense fog between January 9 and 11, 2026, due to an active western disturbance. However, this respite is anticipated to be temporary, as cold conditions and fog may return afterward.

Expected Changes

During the period from January 9 to 11, several regions may see a reduction in fog, with clearer skies and sunshine likely. This could lead to a slight decrease in daytime cold temperatures.

Western Uttar Pradesh, including areas like Ghaziabad, Noida, and Meerut, may experience more significant relief from fog, while eastern parts of the state could still face moderate to dense fog.

Temperature forecasts indicate that minimum temperatures will hover around 8-11°C, while maximum temperatures could reach 20-22°C. There is also a possibility of light rain or hail in some areas.

An alert has been issued for January 9, warning of isolated hail in northwestern Uttar Pradesh, along with a risk of ground frost in Uttarakhand.

Reasons for Relief

The active western disturbance is bringing rain and snowfall to the mountains, which is affecting the plains by causing cloud cover. This may help clear the fog and allow sunshine to break through. However, the IMD has cautioned that after January 11, fog and cold conditions could intensify again, with dense fog expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh from January 12 to 16.

Precautions to Take

When traveling in the early morning, it is essential to use fog lights and exercise caution.

Dress warmly to protect against the cold, especially for children and the elderly.

If fog is particularly thick, delays in train or flight schedules may occur—check ahead before traveling.

Farmers should be aware of the frost risk to crops and take necessary precautions.
