Voting Commences for Anand District By-Election in Gujarat
Voting Begins for Umreth Assembly By-Election
Polling has commenced today at 7 AM for the vacant Umreth assembly seat in Anand district, Gujarat. This by-election follows the unexpected passing of former MLA Govind Parmar, presenting a significant opportunity for the BJP to preserve its legacy and for the Congress to regain ground in central Gujarat.
Reason Behind the By-Election
The by-election was announced by the Election Commission after the death of BJP stalwart and four-time MLA Govind Parmar, who passed away at the age of 72 last month. In light of this, the BJP has fielded Govind Parmar's son, Harshad Parmar, to capitalize on sympathy and legacy.
Candidates and Voter Information
The contest is primarily between BJP candidate Harshad Govindbhai Parmar and Congress candidate Bhrigurajsingh Chauhan. Additionally, three independent candidates and one from another party are also in the fray. According to a statement from the Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat, a total of 245,623 voters are eligible to cast their votes, with the election being managed by 1,500 personnel, including 19 nodal officers and 22 micro observers.
Counting of Votes
Vote counting is scheduled for May 4. Harshad Parmar, making his debut in a significant election, is the son of the late Govind Parmar. On the other hand, Congress candidate Chauhan, aged 62, is a seasoned local leader contesting for the first time in the assembly elections.
Chauhan's Political Background
Chauhan served as the president of the Umreth taluka panchayat for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2015 and currently acts as the party coordinator for central Gujarat. In the 2022 assembly elections, Govind Parmar successfully retained the Umreth seat by defeating the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Jayant Patel by over 25,000 votes.
