Viren Rasquinha Commends Team's Progress

Viren Rasquinha, the former captain of the Indian hockey team, expressed his admiration for the women's squad following their commendable 2-2 draw against China in the ongoing FIH Hockey World Cup. He noted the substantial advancements the team has made since their 0-4 loss to the same team during the 2023 Asian Games semi-finals, emphasizing improvements in skills, strategy, and particularly fitness.

Strong Start in the FIH Hockey World Cup

The Indian women's hockey team kicked off their FIH Hockey World Cup campaign in Belgium and the Netherlands with a challenging match against the 2024 Olympic silver medalists, China, at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Sunday.

"This was an excellent first match for India against China. In our last major encounter, which was the semi-final of the 2023 Asian Games, we suffered a 0-4 defeat. We were significantly behind them then. The women have shown remarkable growth in their skills, strategies, and especially their fitness," Rasquinha shared in a post on X.

Rasquinha further commented, "While India might feel a bit let down for not securing all three points after leading twice, the women should take pride in their impressive performance against the Olympic medallists, showcasing relentless effort and skill. They matched China stride for stride."

Intense Match Results in Draw

In their opening match of the tournament, India made a strong impression, taking the initiative early and applying pressure on China with their aggressive play and consistent ball possession.

India maintained a 2-1 lead at halftime after a dynamic first half filled with opportunities and sustained pressure on the Chinese team.

However, in the 39th minute, China leveled the score with a penalty corner, where Ma Ning executed a brilliant drag-flick that penetrated the Indian defense, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

Neither team could secure a winning goal in the closing moments, leading to a final score of 2-2.

Pool D Standings and Future Matches

Looking ahead, India is set to focus on their next match in Pool D, aiming to build on their spirited performance in the World Cup.

After the initial round of matches, England leads Pool D following a decisive 4-0 win over South Africa, while India and China are tied for second place, with South Africa in fourth.

India's next challenge will be against South Africa on August 18, as they seek their first victory of the tournament.

Additionally, the Indian Men's Hockey Team will compete against England in their second World Cup match on August 17.
