Virat Kohli's Enthusiastic Welcome in Auckland Ahead of ODI Series
A Grand Arrival for Virat Kohli
The arrival of former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli in Auckland resembled a festive occasion rather than a typical airport landing, as hundreds of excited Indian fans gathered to see the batting legend on Friday, October 30.
Kohli is set to join India's ODI squad for a five-match series against New Zealand, commencing on November 4. The first match will take place at Eden Park in Auckland, followed by games in Wellington (November 7), Hamilton (November 10), and a double-header at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui (November 13 & 15).
He arrived in Auckland a day after teammates Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who had already begun their training sessions at the nets.
Kohli's Arrival Sparks Excitement
With the first ODI just days away, Kohli's presence at Auckland Airport ignited excitement among fans. He landed early Friday morning, with supporters braving the early hours to catch a glimpse of him.
A viral video on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), captured the moment as the 37-year-old cricketer navigated through the arrival gate, surrounded by eager fans seeking selfies and autographs.
One female fan, who had reportedly waited two days at the airport, was overjoyed when Kohli signed her poster after she repeatedly requested his autograph.
Security Measures for Kohli
From the moment he disembarked, Kohli was escorted by airport security due to the overwhelming crowd of fans. Officials struggled to manage the throng seeking interactions with the cricket star.
Prior to his trip to Auckland, Kohli had been in Mumbai for a rigorous practice session at Brabourne Stadium, preparing for the upcoming ODI series.
Kohli's ODI Performance in New Zealand
Having stepped back from T20Is and Tests, Kohli is now concentrating on ODIs, aiming to extend his career until the 2027 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Since retiring from Tests, the 37-year-old has participated in every ODI series, including those against Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and West Indies, and is now heading to New Zealand for the five-match series.
Kohli boasts an impressive ODI record in New Zealand, having scored 596 runs, including one century and four fifties, at an average of 49.66 across 13 matches. He is just 226 runs away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 821 runs for the most ODI runs by an Indian in New Zealand.
Overall, Kohli has excelled against New Zealand in ODIs, accumulating 1,897 runs, which includes seven centuries and ten fifties, at an average of 57.48 in 36 matches, surpassing Tendulkar's previous record of 1,750 runs.
