Virat Kohli, the prominent Indian cricketer who retired from Test cricket last year, recently shared his experiences as a captain in the longest format of the game. In a teaser for the RCB Podcast shared on the team's official social media, Kohli discussed how the minimal age difference among players fostered a sense of shared responsibility and ownership within the team.
At 37, Kohli concluded his Test career as India's fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 9,230 runs with an impressive average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. He also holds the record for the most successful captain in India's Test history, achieving 40 victories in 68 matches since taking over the captaincy in 2014 during the Australian tour when MS Dhoni was injured.
A 'Golden Era' for Indian Test Cricket
In the podcast, Kohli reflected on his lengthy tenure in Test cricket, stating, "I have had the privilege of leading India through some remarkable victories, marking a golden era in our Test journey. A group of young players eager to represent India had the opportunity of a lifetime."
He noted that the close age range among key players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja contributed to a collaborative environment where responsibilities were shared.
Kohli emphasized, "The average age of our team meant there was no divide between seniors and juniors. Many younger players had previously played under senior members, creating a friendly atmosphere. While I was leading, the management guided the team forward, but everyone felt a sense of ownership and responsibility due to our similar ages."
He added, "It was not a case of seniors managing the team while juniors remained uninvolved. Instead, we were a young group eager to build a strong team for the future, constantly asking ourselves how we could improve."
Kohli's Remarkable Captaincy Tenure
Kohli's captaincy was marked by significant achievements, including a historic series victory in Australia during the 2018-19 season and seven Test wins in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) conditions, the highest for any Asian captain. His dedication to fitness, aggressive approach, and a talented pace attack elevated India's competitiveness abroad, while the formidable spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja ensured the team remained unbeaten at home.
He stepped down from the captaincy in 2022 following the South Africa tour, with Rohit Sharma succeeding him. Eventually, Shubman Gill took over the leadership role after both Rohit and Kohli retired from Test cricket before the England tour last year.
