Virat Kohli Makes Impact Player Debut in IPL 2026 Amid Injury Concerns
Kohli's Unique Role in IPL 2026
In a notable first since the Impact Player rule was introduced in the IPL in 2023, Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) took on the role of a designated substitute during the IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 15.
Although Kohli was unable to field due to an ankle injury sustained in a previous game against Mumbai Indians, he made a significant impact by batting as an Impact Player in the second innings. He opened the batting and scored a commendable 49 runs off 34 balls, including six boundaries and a six, achieving a strike rate of 144.12, which helped RCB secure a five-wicket victory while chasing a target of 147 runs.
Kohli's Previous Stance on Impact Player Rule
Historically, Kohli has been a vocal opponent of the Impact Player rule, expressing a preference for playing full matches rather than as a substitute. His former teammate, Swastik Chikara, once revealed that Kohli had stated he would rather 'quit cricket' than play solely as an Impact Player.
In a past interview with RevzSports, Chikara recounted Kohli's firm position, emphasizing that he would only participate if fully fit and able to contribute in all aspects of the game. Kohli reportedly said, 'As long as I play cricket, and as long as I’m fully fit, I won’t play as an Impact Player. I will play like a lion. I will field for the full 20 overs and then bat. The day I have to play as an Impact Player, I will quit cricket.'
Kohli's Performance and Injury Context
Kohli's recent performance against Mumbai Indians saw him score 50 runs off 38 balls at a strike rate of 131.57, indicating that he was still recovering from his ankle injury, which limited his ability to field in the second innings.
His participation as an Impact Player in the match against Lucknow Super Giants has reignited discussions about his previous views on the rule, although it was primarily a necessity due to his injury rather than a change in his perspective.
Understanding the Impact Player Rule
The Impact Player rule was first introduced during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2021/22 season and was officially adopted by the BCCI for the IPL in 2023. Tushar Deshpande was the inaugural player to be utilized as an Impact Player in the IPL.
This rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, enabling them to introduce a specialist batter or bowler based on the situation. While it aims to enhance tactical flexibility, the rule has sparked debates regarding its effect on the traditional all-round nature of cricket.
Prominent players like Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, Shane Watson, Keiron Pollard, and Kyle Jamieson have voiced their opinions on the rule, with many questioning its implications for all-rounders and the overall balance of the game.
Despite the ongoing criticism, the BCCI remains committed to the Impact Player rule, viewing it as a means to enrich strategic depth and introduce new tactical elements to the T20 format.
