Tragic Passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill

Virat Kohli, the renowned Indian cricketer, has paid heartfelt tributes to Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former pacer for India Under-19 and Punjab, who sadly passed away at the age of 36 in Chandigarh. Gill, who had a notable presence in domestic cricket for Punjab, died on Wednesday, although the specific circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.


Kohli's Emotional Tribute

Kohli, who shared the field with Gill during their Under-19 days, expressed his sorrow through a post on X. He wrote, "I am shocked and saddened by the news of Amanpreet Gill's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti." The cause of Gill's death has yet to be disclosed.


Amanpreet Gill's Cricket Career

Gill had a brief but impactful cricketing career, representing Punjab in six first-class matches from 2006 to 2008, where he took 11 wickets. As a right-arm medium pacer, he was seen as a promising talent and participated in India's youth cricket tours to England, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka in 2007. He played several youth one-day internationals and a three-day youth 'Test' for India but was not selected for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup squad led by Kohli.


Additionally, Gill was part of the Indian Premier League, playing for Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, during the tournament's inaugural season in 2008. Later in his career, he contributed to Punjab cricket by serving on the senior selection committee.

In a show of respect, players from Punjab Kings donned black armbands during their IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday evening. Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also expressed his condolences on X, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the news of Amanpreet Singh Gill's passing. He was a quiet and dedicated cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti."


The Punjab Cricket Association also released a statement mourning Gill's loss, saying, "The Punjab Cricket Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former cricketer and member of the senior selection committee. Our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones."


Gill's cremation is scheduled for Thursday at 4 PM at the Manimajra Cremation Ground in Chandigarh.
