Violent Mob Attack in Meghalaya: One NGO Member Killed, Three Arrested

Tragic Incident in Goalgaon Village

On January 10, a violent mob attack in Goalgaon village, located in the Rajabala constituency of Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, resulted in the death of an NGO member. In response, authorities have heightened security measures in the area.

The local administration has enforced a night curfew to prevent any further unrest and to uphold law and order.

The deceased has been identified as Dilseng M Sangma, affiliated with the A·chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a civil society organization in Garo.

Reports indicate that Sangma was among a group of 10 to 12 ACHIK members who were present in Goalgaon when they were reportedly attacked by a mob.

Another member of the organization suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, labeled the incident as 'tragic' and condemned the violence, urging for peace and unity among communities.

Sangma stated, 'We have conducted multiple raids and made three arrests so far. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects,' while encouraging citizens to foster communal harmony and assist law enforcement.

Rajabala MLA Mizanur Kazi, in a phone conversation, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway and assured that those responsible will face severe consequences.

'The exact circumstances of the incident are still unclear, but we strongly denounce it and demand the strictest penalties for those involved,' Kazi remarked.

He called for calm, noting that initial reports suggest the ACHIK members arrived in two vehicles, leading to a confrontation with local residents and workers.

'This does not seem to be a premeditated act; it appears to have occurred spontaneously. Nonetheless, it is utterly condemnable, and we express our deepest condolences to the victim's family,' he added.

In honor of the deceased, the market area from Haldiganj to Gumaijhora was closed on Saturday, affecting two constituencies in Garo Hills: Rajabala and Selsella.

Meanwhile, the district administration has ramped up peace-building initiatives.

The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills held a peace meeting with village elders, church leaders, and community representatives in Rajabala on Saturday afternoon.

A similar meeting took place earlier in Tura, the district headquarters, to promote restraint and avert any retaliatory actions.

Authorities have indicated that while the situation remains tense, it is currently under control, with additional police presence in sensitive areas.
