Tragic Shooting in Dhaka

Dhaka, January 8: A disturbing incident in Bangladesh has once again drawn attention to the deteriorating law and order situation. A leader from the Jatiyatabadi Swechasebak Dal was fatally shot by assailants in Dhaka on Wednesday night, as confirmed by police officials on Thursday.

Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, who served as the Joint Convener of the Dhaka North unit of the Swechasebak Dal, was reportedly enjoying tea with a colleague at a stall located behind the Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in the Karwan Bazar area. During this time, multiple attackers arrived on motorcycles, opened fire indiscriminately, and then fled the scene.

According to local media, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) Fazlul Karim from the DMP's Tejgaon Division stated that both individuals were initially taken to BRB Hospital in Panthapath and subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Mosabbir was pronounced dead by the attending doctors.

The other victim, Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, who is the General Secretary of the Tejgaon Police Station Van Workers Union, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Following the shooting, a group of enraged citizens blocked the SAARC Foara intersection in Karwan Bazar, causing significant traffic disruptions. The army intervened around 10:30 PM to disperse the protesters, allowing traffic to resume, as reported by leading Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

This incident follows the shooting of Islamist student leader Sharif Osman Hadi on December 12, who was attacked while riding in a rickshaw on Paltan Road. He was later airlifted to Singapore for medical care but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.

Bangladesh police have labeled Hadi's murder as "politically motivated," with investigators suggesting that the conspiracy was orchestrated from Singapore. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch has filed charges against 17 individuals in connection with this case in a metropolitan court in Dhaka.

Since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took power in August 2024, Bangladesh has experienced a surge in protests and a significant decline in law and order.
