Miscreants allegedly set several houses on fire in Mulam village
Imphal, Apr 24: Ukhrul district experienced a resurgence of violence on Friday, resulting in one fatality and at least two injuries amid a series of alarming incidents, including the reported arson of multiple homes in Mulam village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Litan Police Station.
A press release from the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) on April 24 revealed that a member of the Naga Village Guard (NVG), Horshokmi Jamang (29), hailing from Chatrick Khullen village in Kamjong district, was killed early Friday near Sinakeithei village.
The TNL accused Kuki militants, who are part of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, of ambushing Jamang while he was on patrol between Sirarakhong and Sinakeithei, following reports of suspicious activities in the vicinity.
The TNL expressed deep condolences to Jamang's family, honoring him for his bravery and sacrifice in defending his homeland.
In another troubling incident, Mulam village was reportedly attacked in the early hours, causing panic among its residents and escalating tensions in the area.
The Mulam Village Authority stated that the village was subjected to a "full-scale armed attack" around 5:30 am, characterized by heavy and indiscriminate gunfire and arson. Initially, a blank shot was heard around 1 am, but it did not raise alarms due to the ongoing unrest.
Two individuals sustained severe injuries and were rescued, while there were unconfirmed reports of additional injuries and one possible fatality.
The Village Authority condemned the attack as "unprovoked and premeditated," marking it as a serious escalation and a direct assault on civilians, which they deemed unacceptable.
They also recounted a series of recent violent incidents, including an April 19 occurrence where armed individuals entered farmland in Mulam and fired blank shots at farmers, inciting panic. Later that day, village youths who approached the armed group were reportedly fired upon, although no casualties were reported. Another shooting incident targeting farmers was noted on April 21, further exacerbating fear and insecurity.
These ongoing incidents have fostered an environment of intimidation, disrupting daily life, as the community has shown restraint in hopes of achieving a peaceful resolution.
The Village Authority has urgently warned nearby authorities, including those in Toungou and Sirarikhong, to intervene and de-escalate the situation, but claims that their appeals have gone unanswered.
They have called for immediate government intervention, cautioning that further inaction could lead to more innocent lives being lost.
