Violence Erupts in Manipur: Homes and Church Set Ablaze

Imphal, July 12: New reports of violence have emerged from Tokpa Naga village located in the Champhai region of Kangpokpi district, where around 10 homes and a church were reportedly set on fire on the night of August 11.
The Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) of Manipur released a statement on Wednesday, indicating that the incident took place around 9:30 PM.
According to the council, armed assailants entered the village and set ablaze several structures, including a church. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
The LNC has condemned the attack, expressing alarm over the targeting of civilian properties and a place of worship.
“We are particularly disturbed by reports indicating that security forces were stationed just a few meters away from the site, despite the area being classified as a high-risk zone,” the statement read.
The LNC has called for an investigation into the actions of the security personnel present in the area and any potential negligence on their part.
Additionally, the council is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violence, along with a thorough, impartial, and timely investigation into the matter.
They have also urged for increased security measures in the affected region and adequate support, rehabilitation, and compensation for families whose properties were reportedly destroyed.
This incident raises further concerns regarding the safety of civilians in the Kangpokpi district, which has been experiencing ongoing tensions.
