Heavy firing reported from Naga villages in Kangpokpi and Noney districts
Imphal, Sept 23: A tragic incident unfolded in Manipur when a 36-year-old electric lineman lost his life due to heavy gunfire in the early hours of Wednesday. The violence occurred near Lasan and Songpibung Kuki villages along the IT Road in Kangpokpi district, where reports of firing and attacks also emerged from nearby Naga villages.
Local sources identified the victim as Paojangam Chongloi, a resident of Wakotphai village. He was en route to Lasan for electrical repairs when he was caught in the crossfire around 4 am.
Chongloi suffered severe injuries and later died from them.
Reports indicate that heavy gunfire was prevalent in and around Lasan and Songpibung, raising alarms about the safety of civilians and essential service workers in the region.
In a separate incident, heavy firing and an alleged attack were reported from Makui Chamriupiu Naga village in Kangpokpi district. Details regarding casualties and damage remain unclear.
Additionally, Tazeikaiphun Naga village in Noney district reportedly faced an attack in the morning, according to initial local reports.
Another alarming report emerged from Mukti Part V in Noney district, where three to four houses were allegedly set on fire, based on preliminary information.
These incidents have heightened concerns regarding the safety of civilians in the vulnerable areas of the Kangpokpi-Noney belt, affecting both Kuki and Naga villages.
The death of Chongloi underscores the dangers faced by essential service workers, as he was on his way to restore electricity when he encountered the gunfire.
