Noida, April 13: A demonstration by workers in Phase 2 of Noida, located in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddha Nagar, turned violent on Monday as protesters clashed with law enforcement while demanding higher wages and vandalized property outside a private firm.
The protest, which had been ongoing for three days as a sit-in, escalated dramatically with thousands of workers mobilizing across various industrial sectors. The situation became particularly tense in Sector 1, Block 84, where some demonstrators reportedly set vehicles ablaze. Initial reports indicate that at least two vehicles were completely destroyed in the fire.
Witnesses and early reports suggest that stone-pelting incidents occurred during the unrest, resulting in damage to multiple vehicles and company property. Furthermore, significant traffic disruptions were noted in Sector 62 due to large crowds of workers.
In response to the violence, local authorities have dispatched a substantial police presence to the area. Officers are actively working to prevent further property damage and to restore order. Reports indicate that several vehicles were vandalized, and at least one was set on fire during the protests.
This unrest follows recent commitments made by the district administration. On Sunday, officials from the administration, police, and industrial representatives convened to discuss the workers' demands, promising to take action.
Medha Roopam, the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, mentioned that directives had been issued after discussions with industrial stakeholders. She confirmed that workers would receive double pay for overtime and a guaranteed weekly day off. If employees are required to work on their designated rest day, they will also receive double pay for that day.
The administration has mandated that all workers receive bonuses as per established regulations, with payments to be deposited directly into their bank accounts within the required timeframe.
In an effort to enhance labor conditions, the district administration has implemented new guidelines for Gautam Buddha Nagar. These regulations require all companies to disburse wages by the 10th of each month, enforce double overtime pay, and impose penalties for unauthorized salary deductions. Employers are also required to provide salary slips to all employees.
Additionally, a dedicated control room has been established to swiftly address workers' grievances. The district administration has called on workers to remain calm, avoid spreading rumors, and cooperate with authorities to maintain peace in the area.
