Incident Overview

On Wednesday, officials reported that a crowd allegedly attacked an Assam Rifles camp in Manipur's Senapati district shortly after a search operation commenced. The mob threw stones, vandalized the premises, and set fire to three vehicles belonging to security personnel. This incident occurred around 9:30 AM at the paramilitary force's camp located in the district headquarters. An official stated that the situation was brought under control after security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, which was eventually cleared by midnight.

Current Situation

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from this incident, and the situation in Senapati district has since returned to a peaceful state. According to a statement from the defense department, the Assam Rifles initiated patrols and search operations in the Makuilongdi area after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of armed cadres approximately two kilometers west of the designated NSCN (IM) camp in Oklong.

Intelligence Reports

Another official indicated that intelligence reports and social media posts revealed armed cadres were moving outside their designated camps, wearing weapons and uniforms, which clearly violates the established ceasefire rules. It was also noted that these violations have been formally reported to the ceasefire monitoring group.

Crowd Confrontation

During the operation, Assam Rifles troops approached the villages of Makuilongdi and Oklong, where they were confronted by local residents, including women. As tensions escalated, reports emerged around 9 PM that a large crowd had gathered in Senapati city, preparing to march towards the Assam Rifles camp in the Naga Taphou area. Despite attempts to disperse the crowd, a significant number reached the camp around 9:30 PM, throwing stones and attempting to cause property damage and arson.

Damage Report

The mob vandalized Assam Rifles vehicles, with reports indicating that a light vehicle was set ablaze, while two trucks were overturned and damaged. Additionally, a private car was also burned during the violence, and the waiting area in front of the camp was set on fire. To restore order, the Senapati district police and CRPF were promptly deployed to assist security personnel.
