Vinesh Phogat Reveals Her Identity as a Harassment Victim

In a significant announcement ahead of her return to competitive wrestling, Vinesh Phogat disclosed on Sunday that she is among six female wrestlers who have lodged sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). In a video shared on X, she explained her choice to go public despite the ongoing legal proceedings. "The Supreme Court's guidelines emphasize that a victim's identity should remain confidential to protect their dignity. However, due to recent developments, I feel compelled to share that I am one of the six victims who filed a complaint, and our testimonies are still in progress," Vinesh stated.

Concerns About Competing in Gonda

The three-time Olympian, a prominent figure in the protests at Jantar Mantar in 2023, expressed her apprehensions about competing in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, citing safety and mental strain. The National Open Ranking Tournament 2026 is set for May 10 to 12, and Vinesh is looking to make her comeback at this event. "Consider the scenario where I have to go to his residence or college, where everyone is connected to him. Competing in such an environment adds immense pressure on athletes. Our team and the nation expect us to perform well, but I doubt I can give my best under these circumstances. Competing as a woman in such a situation is incredibly challenging," she remarked.

'Government Will Be Responsible'

Vinesh further criticized Singh's public remarks and the absence of action against him. "Brij Bhushan openly claims he has killed someone, yet he faces no consequences. This reflects his mentality and raises concerns about what he might do next. I do not seek any special treatment; I only want the outcomes on the mat to reflect the hard work of every athlete, not influenced by any thug," she asserted.

Calls for Transparency

Phogat called for transparency and urged the sports community and media to attend the tournament. "To all sports enthusiasts and media personnel who have passionately covered sports in India, I invite you to be present. The truth must be revealed to the entire nation," she emphasized.

Vinesh Phogat's Career and Comeback

The upcoming National Open Ranking Tournament will signify Phogat's return to the mat following the Paris Olympics 2024, marking her debut in the 57kg category, her fifth weight class change. This tournament is crucial for her qualification for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. At 31, Phogat had initially declared her retirement after missing weight for the gold medal match at Paris 2024 but reversed her decision in December, aiming for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. As one of India's most successful wrestlers, she has achieved notable victories across various weight classes, including gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in the 53kg category, along with impressive performances at the Olympics.
