Vinesh Phogat, a seasoned Indian wrestler and three-time Olympian, has voiced her concerns regarding the fairness of the Asian Games 2026 trials. This statement follows her defeat in the semi-finals of the women's 53kg category selection trials held at Indira Gandhi Stadium on Saturday, where she lost 4-6 to Meenakshi Goyat, effectively ending her chances to compete in the upcoming Asian Games.

Phogat's Reaction to the Loss

In a post-match interview, Vinesh expressed her doubts about the integrity of the trials, stating that the issues were apparent to everyone, including the media. She suggested that the system seemed to be biased against certain athletes. Despite these challenges, she affirmed her commitment to continue fighting against what she perceives as an unjust system. "I don't need to elaborate; everyone witnessed the fairness of the process. The entire nation is aware, and this has been an ongoing issue. The media was present, and there were disputes over every point throughout the day. The system appears to be aligned against us, but we stand firm and will keep fighting," she remarked.

Phogat Reflects on Her Performance

Discussing her performance, Phogat stated that she gave her all during the trials. While she acknowledged the need for further improvement, she expressed hope that her journey would inspire her son. "I did my utmost. I gave 100%. I want to leave the mat knowing I did everything I could. I may need to work harder, but I take pride in the fact that my son will see that I was training on the wrestling mat when he was just 10 months old. I aspire to be a source of motivation for him," she shared.

Phogat's participation in the trials followed a lengthy legal dispute with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) concerning the selection criteria for the Asian Games 2026. Competing in the 53kg category, she faced opponents like Meenakshi Goyat and Antim Panghal, with the winner securing a place at the continental event. Unfortunately, she was eliminated by Meenakshi in the semi-finals.
