Vinesh Phogat Criticizes Haryana Wrestling Association's Selection Process
Concerns Over Selection Criteria
Prominent Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has publicly criticized the Wrestling Haryana Association (WHA) for what she describes as 'unjust' selection standards for the upcoming Federation Cup 2026. In a post on X, she expressed that the criteria, which only consider wrestlers who earned medals in senior state tournaments last year or participated in international competitions, are detrimental to many dedicated athletes.
Vinesh highlighted that with significant events like the Asian Games and World Championships approaching, the current selection process is sidelining numerous wrestlers, adversely impacting their careers. The two-time World Championship bronze medalist emphasized that the state-level trials are not equitable and hinder the emergence of new talent. She has called upon Haryana's Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, to take action.
'A Betrayal to Hardworking Wrestlers'
In her post, Vinesh stated, 'The selection criteria of the Haryana Wrestling Association for the Federation Cup 2026 are completely unfair. Limiting trial opportunities to only 2025 Senior State medalists and those who competed internationally in 2025 betrays thousands of hardworking wrestlers.'
She questioned the rationale behind excluding 2024 National medalists and those who could not compete in Senior Nationals due to age restrictions, asserting that these athletes should still be eligible for 2026. Vinesh pointed out that major tournaments are on the horizon, and the current rules are effectively blocking athletes from pursuing their dreams and jeopardizing their futures.
Call for Fair Trials and Government Intervention
Vinesh further lamented, 'Where will our wrestlers go after dedicating years of hard work? The current state of affairs shows that even fair trials at the state level are lacking. Without proper selection processes, how can new talent be nurtured for the nation?'
She advocated for open trials, emphasizing that talent should be recognized on the mat, and denying athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills is a significant injustice. Vinesh concluded her appeal by urging Chief Minister Saini to intervene and ensure fairness for Haryana's wrestlers.
