North Lakhimpur, July 4: Residents from various villages within the Lohit Khabolu Gaon Panchayat in the former Lakhimpur district have come together to construct a bamboo bridge. This bridge spans the damaged wooden structure that connects Patharichuk to Garmur in Majuli district, primarily to assist schoolchildren in their daily commutes.
The villagers from Pathorichuk, Boralimora, Dugharia, and Dugharia Samabay collaborated to build this bamboo bridge using collective labor, aiming to ease the transportation challenges faced by students and patients alike.
The existing wooden bridge has been in disrepair for several months, leaving residents reliant on boats to cross the river.
In December 2021, the Lohit Khabolu Gaon Panchayat, which includes 27 villages and around 30,000 residents, was transferred from Lakhimpur district to Majuli district to improve access to administrative services and facilities.
Tragically, there have been numerous instances where patients have died while being transported to healthcare facilities in Lakhimpur via boat, including women in labor who have given birth outdoors or on boats, and children who have succumbed to snake bites due to delays caused by poor road conditions.
The Sri Sri Pitambardev Goswami District Hospital, located 4 kilometers from Patharichuk in Garamur, presents a daunting journey for patients. The path is fraught with challenges, including muddy and slippery roads during the monsoon and dusty, uneven terrain in winter, jeopardizing patient safety before they reach medical assistance.
The deteriorating state of three wooden bridges over the Lohit stream and the surrounding roads forces villagers to face daily struggles to access essential services such as healthcare and education.
During the monsoon season, flooding compels villagers to navigate the river using small boats, which poses significant risks as the bridges cannot support heavy loads in turbulent waters.
Despite the transfer to Majuli district aimed at improving connectivity four years ago, inadequate bridge infrastructure continues to hinder the lives of thousands in the Lohit Khabalu area.
