Vijay Yadav: The Ambidextrous Bowler Making Waves in UP T20 League
A Unique Talent in Cricket
In the realm of modern cricket, witnessing a bowler switch arms mid-over is quite uncommon. However, 24-year-old Vijay Yadav is changing that narrative in the UP T20 League. Recently, he showcased his exceptional skill by taking two vital wickets for the Kashi Rudras, leading them to victory against his previous team, the Gaur Gorakhpur Lions.
From Local Talent to Star Player
Yadav's journey in the UP T20 League commenced when he was identified as a promising local player ahead of the 2024 season. Initially, he played for the Gaur Gorakhpur Lions for two years before being acquired by the Kashi Rudras for ₹5.2 lakhs during the 2026 auction. For Yadav, this financial aspect was merely a stepping stone. He remarked, "I didn't think much about it. For me, it's about the investment in cricket being rewarded by God. Most of the money went towards equipment."
Inspired by a Historic Win
Originating from Gorakhpur, Yadav's passion for cricket was ignited by India's historic World Cup victory in 2011. With a father serving as a Sub-Inspector and a mother as a homemaker, pursuing sports wasn't the obvious choice. He shared, "I started cricket in 2012 when India won the World Cup... I felt motivated to contribute positively to my country."
Perfecting a Rare Skill
Yadav's dedication led him to represent the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) in both U-19 and U-23 tournaments, where his ambidextrous bowling caught the attention of scouts. He explained that his ability to bowl with both arms developed out of necessity, stating, "My left hand was always a bit more functional. Right-handed batsmen tend to attack right-handed bowlers, so I began practicing with my left arm to gain an advantage."
The Challenge of Ambidextrous Bowling
While his skill may appear effortless on screen, Yadav emphasized the physical demands of his craft. He noted, "Bowling with both hands is challenging. People think it's easy, but I have to train extensively with both arms." His commitment did not go unnoticed, as he received significant support from coaches during his development.
A Versatile Lower-Order Batter
In addition to his bowling prowess, Yadav is also a capable lower-order batsman. He prefers a traditional batting stance and aims to make a significant impact with limited opportunities, stating, "I focus on hitting sixes since I get fewer balls to play."
Inspired by a Cricketing Icon
Yadav draws inspiration from Virat Kohli, a modern cricket icon known for his relentless work ethic. He expressed admiration for Kohli's passion, saying, "He has so much dedication and aggression. It's inspiring to watch him play."
Aiming for the IPL
With his impressive performances in the UP T20 League, Yadav is on the verge of entering the Indian Premier League (IPL). His participation in this state-level tournament has attracted attention from major teams across the country. He acknowledged, "This platform is significant. I've had trials with MI (Mumbai Indians) and SRH (Sunrisers Hyderabad) last year."
A Rising Star
As Vijay Yadav continues to impress with his unique ambidextrous bowling for the Kashi Rudras, he is quickly becoming one of the standout players of Season 4, showcasing the journey of a small-town boy with extraordinary talent on his way to the big leagues.
