Election Commission Sets Date for Vice Presidential Polls

On Friday, the Election Commission declared that the election for the Vice President of India will take place on September 9, with the counting of votes occurring on the same day. Candidates must submit their nominations by August 21, and they have until August 25 to withdraw their candidacy. This vacancy arose after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Parliament Session, citing health concerns. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar stated, "To prioritize health care and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution."

The Election Commission of India announced on Thursday that it has finalized the electoral college list for the upcoming Vice Presidential Election in 2025. In a post shared on X, the Commission noted, "Accordingly, the Commission has finalized the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses."

The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a designated counter in the Election Commission of India following the notification, which is expected to be announced soon. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members from both Houses of Parliament, following the system of proportional representation through the single transferable vote, with voting conducted via secret ballot. Elections to fill a vacancy due to the end of a Vice President's term must be completed before the term expires. If a vacancy occurs due to death, resignation, or removal, the election to fill that position is held promptly after the event. The elected individual will serve a full five-year term starting from the date they assume office.
