Vice President Vance Cancels Islamabad Trip Amid Iran Negotiation Uncertainty
Cancellation of Vice President Vance's Trip
Vice President JD Vance's anticipated visit to Islamabad for discussions regarding Iran has been scrapped, as the situation surrounding the negotiations becomes increasingly unclear. A representative from the White House confirmed that Vance, who was set to travel with special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, will not proceed with the trip due to President Trump's recent post on Truth Social, which indicated that the United States is waiting for a cohesive proposal from Iran. The official statement mentioned that any further announcements regarding in-person meetings will be made by the White House.
Iran Declares Negotiations a 'Waste of Time'
Simultaneously, the Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran has opted out of the scheduled discussions in Pakistan. According to the agency's correspondent, Tehran withdrew after the US maintained what it termed as 'excessive demands.' The report stated, 'Iran ultimately announced today that, given this situation, it considers participating in negotiations a waste of time, as the US is obstructing any suitable agreement.' Iran has communicated its decision to Pakistan and other mediators, although this information has not been independently verified.
This development follows President Trump's announcement to extend the ceasefire with Iran, stepping back from previous military threats just hours before the ceasefire was set to expire. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the ceasefire would remain effective until Iran's 'leaders and representatives can present a unified proposal' and negotiations are finalized. He noted, 'Given that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured… we have been asked to hold our attack,' referencing requests from Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif. Despite the ceasefire extension, the US military continues its blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran's decision to forgo the talks has further complicated the negotiation process.
