Young Cricketers Making Waves in Test Cricket
Currently, the cricketing world is witnessing an impressive performance from young players in Test matches. Recently, Shubman Gill captured global attention by scoring a double century against England at Edgbaston. Following this, South Africa's Vian Mulder has also made headlines by achieving a double century, shaking up the record books. This milestone is particularly noteworthy as he accomplished it in his debut match as captain. The South African team is currently touring Zimbabwe, where they are set to play two Test matches. Keshav Maharaj led the team in the first Test, but due to a groin injury, he had to withdraw from the second Test.
After losing the toss and opting to bat first, the South African team amassed 465 runs for the loss of 4 wickets on the first day. Vian Mulder, batting at number three, scored his maiden double century. As a captain, he became the third player to score a century in his debut match, following New Zealand's Graham Dowling and West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
The real magic happened when he crossed the 250-run mark in his first innings. Mulder has now become the first player in the world to achieve this feat in his debut match as captain. No one had accomplished such a milestone in world cricket before him.
Moreover, Vian Mulder is now the third South African captain to score a century in his debut Test match and the first in 70 years. Jackie McGlew achieved this feat against England in Manchester back in 1955. Overall, he is the 34th Test captain to score a century in his debut match.
