Verizon has recently increased the price of its Unlimited Ultimate plan for new customers while introducing new features aimed at enhancing value. Verizon's Recent Price Changes

This month, Verizon made a notable adjustment to its pricing structure, which may influence potential customers differently than existing ones. On May 7, the telecommunications provider raised the cost of its Unlimited Ultimate plan by $5 for new subscribers. However, current users will not see any changes due to a three-year price lock guarantee. This increase may deter those contemplating a new subscription.

According to Verizon, the price hike is accompanied by enhanced features, namely Identity Secure and Verizon Family Plus, which the company claims provide an additional $15 in monthly value.


Reasons Behind the Price Increase

Verizon is facing challenges with customer retention. CEO Dan Schulman noted in a January earnings call that the rate of postpaid phone customers discontinuing their service had risen by 25 basis points over three years, attributing this trend to price increases that lacked added value. Schulman emphasized that such price hikes without corresponding benefits tend to frustrate customers. The recent adjustment appears to reflect a shift in strategy, aiming to bundle value with any future price increases.


New Offers to Attract Customers

To mitigate customer loss following the price increase, Verizon is currently waiving its $40 activation fee for new device lines or for customers bringing their own devices on the Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus, or Unlimited Ultimate plans. However, this offer is limited to online transactions. Although the $40 fee will appear at checkout, Verizon will issue a one-time bill credit within one or two billing cycles.

Additionally, customers who purchase a new smartphone and add a new line to any of these Unlimited plans can receive a $100 Verizon e-gift card, also available only for online orders. To claim the card, customers must submit a redemption request within 60 days of their order, with the gift card sent via email within eight weeks.


Navigating a Competitive Market

The timing of these promotions is noteworthy, especially after Schulman's recent comments regarding a reduction in promotional offers, including free-line deals, aimed at increasing revenue per line. He stated, "We are no longer giving away lines for free." This indicates Verizon's attempt to find a balance between reducing giveaways while still providing enough incentives to retain customers in a highly competitive wireless market.
