Fire Incident at Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard

On Thursday afternoon, a vegetation fire broke out close to the Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard, generating significant smoke visible across parts of San Francisco. The San Francisco Fire Department received numerous reports about the incident around 1:30 PM, leading to a swift response from emergency crews to the vicinity of Quesada and Fitch streets, as stated by Lt. Mariano Elias, a department spokesperson.

According to Elias, the blaze involved vegetation, primarily weeds, igniting at the decommissioned naval facility. As of 2 PM, firefighters were actively engaged in efforts to control the fire, with no injuries reported at that time. Notably, the former Navy shipyard is recognized as a federal Superfund site, where concerning levels of airborne radioactive materials were identified in 2024.

The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed the situation via social media, stating, "At 1:27 PM, SFFD received multiple calls regarding a large grass fire at Quesada/Fitch St. in the now-closed Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Crews are continuing to manage this fire, and construction workers have utilized their heavy machinery to assist in creating a fire line. Currently, two fire engines and a mini pump grass unit are on the scene, under the direction of a Battalion chief. No structures are currently at risk."
