VD Satheesan Appointed as Kerala's New Chief Minister After Intense Discussions
Congress Announces New Leadership in Kerala
After several days of consultations and rising suspense, the Congress party officially named senior leader V.D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala on Thursday. This decision followed a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) in Thiruvananthapuram and was reached after extensive discussions among senior Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, in New Delhi. The deliberations were crucial as various factions within the party were vying for the chief ministerial position.
Resolution to Long-standing Uncertainty
Satheesan's elevation marks the conclusion of a prolonged period of uncertainty that had overshadowed the Congress-led United Democratic Front's (UDF) impressive victory in the Kerala assembly elections, where the coalition secured 102 out of 140 seats. During the CLP meeting held at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan was formally chosen as the leader, paving the way for him to claim the formation of the next government.
Intensive Discussions Preceding the Announcement
The announcement came after multiple rounds of discussions in Delhi, which continued until just hours before the KPCC meeting. Prior to this, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal was seen arriving at Rahul Gandhi's residence in New Delhi, fueling speculation that the high command was engaged in final deliberations. Senior leaders Deepa Dasmunshi, Ajay Maken, and Mukul Wasnik were also present in Delhi as discussions progressed. By midday, the Congress leadership maintained silence on the final decision, adding to the political suspense.
