Legal Controversy Surrounds Young Cricketer

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) and their rising star, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, have found themselves at the center of a legal and ethical debate after a social activist threatened to file a police report regarding his involvement in the IPL.

Sooryavanshi, who has been part of the IPL since last season, has quickly become a key player for the RR, showcasing his explosive batting style and fearless approach, which has captivated cricket fans and marked him as a standout young talent in the league.

Impressive Performance by Sooryavanshi

Having celebrated his 15th birthday in March, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is currently the top run-scorer for the Royals in the ongoing IPL season, accumulating 404 runs, which includes a century and two half-centuries. His average stands at 40.40, complemented by an impressive strike rate of 237.64 across 10 matches, further solidifying his status as one of the tournament's most exciting young players.

Criticism of Young Cricketer's Participation

As Sooryavanshi's profile rises in the IPL, a social activist from Karnataka has raised concerns about the ethics of a teenager participating in professional cricket. CM Shivakumar Nayak, during a discussion on a local Kannada news channel, argued that young athletes should prioritize their education over professional sports, particularly in high-pressure environments like the IPL.

Nayak expressed his belief that Sooryavanshi, at just 15 years old, is being exploited and labeled the situation as akin to child labor, stating, "This boy is just a child, and his involvement in the IPL raises serious ethical questions."

Legal Action Threatened Against Rajasthan Royals

The activist has indicated plans to file a police complaint against the Rajasthan Royals, asserting that the participation of minors in such demanding tournaments violates child rights and labor laws. Nayak emphasized, "I will take legal action against the management of Rajasthan Royals for this exploitation."

He further insisted that Sooryavanshi should focus on his studies rather than participating in professional cricket.

Child Labour Law Context

According to Indian child labor laws, children under 14 are prohibited from working in any occupation, while those aged 14 to 18 are restricted from hazardous jobs, with exceptions for regulated activities like sports. In Sooryavanshi's case, his participation is classified as part of a regulated professional sport, not child labor under the law.

Public Reaction to Activist's Claims

Nayak's comments have sparked significant backlash on social media, with many users criticizing his interpretation of child labor laws in the context of professional sports. Fans and cricket enthusiasts have taken to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to defend Sooryavanshi, arguing that he is excelling in a sport sanctioned by the BCCI.

Critics have dismissed Nayak's claims as illogical and a publicity stunt, asserting that Sooryavanshi is not being exploited but is instead thriving in his cricketing career.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Journey

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, making him the youngest crorepati in IPL history at that time. He has proven his worth by having a remarkable debut season, scoring 252 runs, including a century and a fifty, with an average of 36 and a strike rate of 206.55 in seven matches.

To date, Sooryavanshi has accumulated 656 runs in his IPL career, featuring two centuries and three fifties, with an average of 38.58 and a strike rate of 224.65 across 17 matches.
