The Rajasthan Royals made headlines by acquiring 13-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the IPL 2024 mega auction. This move marked a significant moment in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
Sooryavanshi was signed for INR 1.1 crore, making him the youngest player ever to secure an IPL contract. He quickly proved his worth with impressive performances, culminating in a record-breaking 2026 season where he became the youngest recipient of the Orange Cap, amassing 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30.
Earning INR 1.1 crore per season, Sooryavanshi's contributions far exceeded his initial contract value. With two centuries and six fifties, he established himself as a formidable player, boasting a combined strike rate of 228.95 over his first 23 matches.
Sooryavanshi's Mixed Emotions on Auction Day
Despite his success, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi expressed disappointment on auction day. Although he was ultimately signed by the Rajasthan Royals, he had hoped for more franchises to show interest in him.
In a conversation with RR manager Romi Bhinder, he shared his feelings about the bidding process, stating, "Honestly, when I was picked, I thought only two teams bid for me, so why not? I performed well in trials, and I expected more teams to be interested."
Gratitude for the Rajasthan Royals
Reflecting on his journey, Sooryavanshi acknowledged that his initial disappointment was short-lived. He expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity provided by the Rajasthan Royals.
"After spending one-and-a-half years with the team, I must have thanked God at least 1000 times for bringing me to a team like Rajasthan Royals," he remarked.
He emphasized the supportive environment within the team, stating, "The coaches, support staff, and players feel like family. It’s a comfortable atmosphere where you can share anything."
Sooryavanshi's Impressive IPL Stats
Following his remarkable 2026 season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to be a crucial part of the Rajasthan Royals' future as they prepare for IPL 2027.
In his IPL career, he has scored a total of 1,028 runs, including two centuries and six fifties, with an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95 across 23 matches. Notably, 900 of his runs have come from boundaries, showcasing his aggressive batting style.
