India's Upcoming Matches and Sooryavanshi's Anticipated Debut

As India prepares to face Ireland in the second T20I and subsequently England in a five-match T20I series, all eyes are on the young batting talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is expected to make his international debut following an impressive IPL season.

The Rise of a Young Star

Kumar Sangakkara, a former Sri Lankan cricketer, shared insights on Sky Sports about how the Rajasthan Royals identified Sooryavanshi. He recounted, "In 2023, our analyst Akshay informed us about a 12-year-old named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, highlighting his exceptional talent. His coach, Manish Ojha, had advised Vaibhav's father that he was ready for professional cricket at just 12 years old. Initially, we were skeptical, but Akshay was adamant, so we invited him for a trial."

Sangakkara continued, "At that time, Rahul Dravid was the head coach at RR. After watching him for a few minutes, they decided, 'We must sign this kid.' I first noticed Vaibhav during a camp in Guwahati, where he faced bowlers Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma. While others hesitated, Vaibhav confidently stepped up to bat. The sound of his bat striking the ball was remarkable, and he handled Archer and Sandeep effortlessly, even making Archer laugh at his audacity."

A Record-Breaking Performance

During a recent tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, which included Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A, Sooryavanshi scored 211 runs across five innings, averaging 42.20 with a striking rate nearing 201. His highest score was 94, and he achieved the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A.

Following a stellar IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he accumulated 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties, Sooryavanshi earned his first national call-up. He concluded the tournament as the top run-scorer, hitting a record 72 sixes and receiving multiple accolades, including the Orange Cap and Most Valuable Player.

Unwavering Confidence

Sangakkara highlighted Sooryavanshi's remarkable self-belief, recounting a match against Lucknow Super Giants. "Before the chase began, Vaibhav confidently told me, 'Coach, don't worry. It's done.' He then boasted to his teammates that he would hit 13 sixes, ultimately achieving 10. Initially, they thought he was joking, but as he reached five sixes, they realized he was serious. This level of confidence at just 15 is extraordinary," he remarked.

Anticipation for His International Debut

India lost the first T20I against Ireland by 34 runs. The upcoming second T20I in Belfast will be significant, especially if Sooryavanshi debuts, potentially making him the youngest Indian to play international cricket at the age of 15.

Managing Fame and Expectations

Sangakkara expressed confidence in Sooryavanshi's ability to handle the attention that comes with fame. "At Rajasthan Royals, we prioritize his management and protection, ensuring he remains grounded and focused. He has numerous opportunities ahead, both in cricket and commercially. Balancing these aspects, along with family and team support, will be vital," he stated.

"Vaibhav's passion for batting is evident. He is not overwhelmed by fame and maintains a curious mindset beyond cricket. I believe he will be a significant player in Indian cricket and beyond, and he is mentally prepared to face the challenges of fame," he concluded.
