Uttarakhand's Sports Development Meeting with Mary Kom
Enhancing Sports in Uttarakhand
On Thursday, R.K. Sudhanshu, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, met with Mary Kom, an Olympic medalist, renowned boxer, and former Rajya Sabha member, in Dehradun.
The meeting focused on exploring various strategies to boost youth involvement in sports and develop their skills through partnerships with corporate sectors and NGOs. In alignment with the Chief Minister's vision, discussions also emphasized improving sports facilities, training programs, and creating opportunities to motivate young individuals towards sports, thereby enhancing the sporting culture in the state and paving the way for athletes to succeed on both national and international platforms.
Mary Kom: A Legendary Boxer
Mary Kom, an Olympic medalist and six-time world champion, is celebrated as a boxing icon. She holds the record for being a six-time world champion (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2018) in women's boxing, with a bronze medal from 2019 adding to her accolades. Her rise to fame began in 2002 when she became the first Indian boxer to secure a gold medal at the World Championships, marking the start of a remarkable journey in Indian sports.
Olympic Achievements
A pivotal moment in her career occurred during the London 2012 Olympics, where she represented India as the sole female boxer and won a bronze medal in the women's flyweight category. This achievement was particularly noteworthy as it represented only the second Olympic boxing medal for India, following Vijender Singh's bronze in Beijing 2008. Additionally, Mary Kom became the third Indian woman to earn an Olympic medal, joining the ranks of weightlifter Karnam Malleswari and badminton player Saina Nehwal.
