Significant Increase in Marriage Registrations

On Saturday, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a notable rise in marriage registrations since the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He emphasized that the UCC not only organizes society legally but also represents a crucial step in safeguarding women's rights and interests. According to a press release from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office, each registration under the UCC symbolizes the state's commitment to social empowerment.

Since the UCC came into effect on January 27, 2025, there has been a remarkable increase in marriage registrations. A total of 301,526 marriages have been registered under the UCC, averaging 1,634 registrations per day, which is significantly higher than the previous system. For context, from 2010 until January 26, 2025, only 330,064 marriages were registered under the Uttarakhand Marriage Registration Act of 2010, averaging just 67 per day.

The introduction of the UCC has streamlined the marriage registration process, making it more transparent and efficient. This has led to increased enthusiasm among citizens regarding marriage registrations. To further facilitate this process, the state government has extended the registration period under the UCC from the previously set six months to one year. A notification regarding this change has already been issued by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department.
