On Tuesday, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the 'Khel Mahakumbh-Chief Minister's Championship Trophy 2026' at the Late Kailash Chandra Gahtori Sports Stadium located in Tanakpur, Champawat district. The event commenced with the Chief Minister passing the torch to celebrated athlete Gehna Mahar.
Commitment to Sportsmanship
During the event, athletes pledged to compete with integrity, discipline, and true sportsmanship. Participants showcased yoga asanas and the traditional Uttarakhand sport, 'Murga Jhapta', as highlighted in a press release from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office.
Empowering Rural Athletes
CM Dhami emphasized that Khel Mahakumbh serves as a vital platform for showcasing the sporting talent emerging from Uttarakhand's villages. He assured that the state government is dedicated to ensuring that no deserving athlete is overlooked due to a lack of resources or opportunities.
He noted that sports extend beyond merely winning medals; they foster discipline, confidence, resilience, and contribute to building a robust character and nation. The government aims to make sports a cornerstone for the promising future of Uttarakhand's youth.
Khel Mahakumbh's Growth
Launched in 2017, Khel Mahakumbh has now reached its 10th edition. Last year, over 220,000 athletes participated, and the Chief Minister expressed optimism for even greater participation this year.
Structured Competitions and Rewards
This year's Khel Mahakumbh features an expanded format, with competitions starting at the Nyaya Panchayat level and advancing through assembly and parliamentary constituencies, culminating at the state level. This structure allows athletes to demonstrate their skills at multiple stages.
Winners from all levels will receive cash prizes, with approximately ₹11 crore allocated for direct transfer to athletes' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Additionally, medalists in state-level competitions will now benefit from a 4% horizontal reservation in government jobs, recognizing their hard work and aspirations.
Achievements and Future Aspirations
CM Dhami praised Uttarakhand's athletes for their remarkable performance at the 38th National Games, expressing confidence that talent nurtured through Khel Mahakumbh will represent the state and nation with pride in future competitions.
He highlighted the significant shift in the country's sports approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with initiatives like 'Khelo India' and the 'Fit India Movement' providing opportunities for rural talent to shine.
Support for Young Athletes
The state's new sports policy offers government jobs to medal winners at national and international levels through an expedited appointment process. So far, 29 athletes have secured government positions, with ongoing efforts to employ medalists from the National Games.
The Chief Minister's Sports Development Fund encourages athletes, providing selected players in residential sports colleges with free training, accommodation, meals, sports equipment, and medical care.
To nurture young talent, monthly scholarships are available for children aged 8 to 14 under the Chief Minister's Emerging Player Development Scheme, while those aged 14 to 23 receive financial assistance for sports equipment and insurance coverage for accidents during competitions.
Infrastructure Development
The government is rapidly advancing the development of modern sports infrastructure across Uttarakhand. Recently, the foundation stone for the Uttarakhand State Sports University in Haldwani was laid, and plans for a modern stadium in Khatima have been announced.
The 'One District, One Sport' initiative aims to promote various sports disciplines and local athletes, fostering a unique sporting identity for each district.
