Uttar Pradesh Unveils Advanced Forensic Science Laboratory to Strengthen Law Enforcement
Uttar Pradesh has inaugurated a cutting-edge forensic science laboratory in Gorakhpur, aimed at enhancing law enforcement capabilities. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the state's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against crime, ensuring that offenders face justice. With the establishment of more forensic labs and mobile vans for rapid evidence collection, the state is set to improve the efficiency of criminal investigations. The recent implementation of new criminal laws has further underscored the importance of these facilities, making forensic investigations mandatory for serious offenses. Inauguration of the New Forensic Facility
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a newly upgraded A-grade Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) in Gorakhpur, emphasizing that this modern six-story facility, built at a cost of ₹72.78 crores, represents a significant advancement in bolstering law enforcement capabilities. He stated that in the 'New Uttar Pradesh' established since 2017, there is no room for crime, and anyone attempting to break the law will face consequences. Following the inauguration and inspection of the advanced laboratory, he congratulated the residents of Eastern Uttar Pradesh for gaining access to such enhanced forensic capabilities.
Zero Tolerance Policy Against Crime
Yogi further remarked that the days when victims wandered helplessly while criminals roamed freely are over. Under a strict zero-tolerance policy, the state government has established a robust system for evidence collection and certification through modern forensic science laboratories, ensuring that no criminal can evade accountability. He highlighted that the high-tech forensic facilities have created a reliable mechanism for scientific investigations, making it impossible for offenders to escape justice. Accurate, swift, and transparent investigations are now enabling timely and hassle-free justice for victims.
Expansion of Forensic Laboratories
Despite being the most populous state, Uttar Pradesh had only four forensic laboratories until 2017. After his government took office, it was decided that each commissionerate should have its own forensic lab. Today, the number has increased to 12, with six more under construction. Soon, every commissionerate will have its laboratory, ensuring comprehensive forensic examinations for evidence verification and aiding in strict actions against criminals.
Mobile Forensic Vans for Quick Evidence Collection
In addition to establishing these laboratories, the government has deployed two mobile forensic vans in each district to ensure rapid evidence collection. This system allows for solid evidence to be gathered within hours, facilitating more efficient justice for victims. He asserted, "No criminal will escape now." The Chief Minister noted that prior to 2017, even when evidence was collected, many criminals often went free due to a lack of adequate forensic facilities.
Importance of Forensic Labs Post-New Criminal Laws
However, since the implementation of three new criminal laws under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership last July—the Indian Justice Code, 2023, the Indian Citizen Security Code, 2023, and the Indian Evidence Code, 2023—the role of forensic laboratories has become even more crucial. For crimes punishable by over seven years, forensic investigations are now mandatory. Uttar Pradesh has already laid the groundwork for this change.
