Uttar Pradesh Police Officer Arrested for Trader's Death During Questioning
Incident Overview
A police sub-inspector has been taken into custody following allegations of fatally assaulting a trader during an interrogation on the streets of Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday night.
The accused, identified as Sub-Inspector Manikant Srivastava, was overseeing the Bandiya police outpost at the time of the incident.
According to statements from Sitapur Circle Officer Kapoor Kumar, Srivastava faces charges of culpable homicide.
The victim, 26-year-old Satyapal Yadav, was rushed to a hospital late Tuesday with severe injuries but succumbed the following day.
A post-mortem examination revealed multiple injury marks on Yadav's body, and viscera samples have been collected for forensic analysis as the exact cause of death remains undetermined.
Yadav's family claims that the police officer assaulted him under the guise of questioning him for being out at night.
In response, family members and local residents staged a protest by blocking a road, demanding accountability for the officer involved.
A first information report has been lodged against Srivastava and another police constable, citing culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Initial investigations indicate that police were conducting patrols and questioning individuals in light of recent burglary incidents in the Sidhauli area.
Station House Officer Balwant Shahi mentioned that the trader was reportedly intoxicated and behaving suspiciously when approached by the police for questioning.
