Bird Flu Precautions in Uttar Pradesh
On Wednesday, an alert regarding bird flu was issued in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the release of guidelines to mitigate the potential threat of H5 avian influenza. Following a review, the Chief Minister instructed all relevant departments to ensure the safety of protected animals and birds, while also warning against negligence.
In light of the potential bird flu threat, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered enhanced security measures at all zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetlands, and cow shelters across the state. According to an official statement, the Chief Minister mandated regular cleaning of zoo premises and emphasized the immediate implementation of measures in accordance with both central and state guidelines. Sanitation efforts may include the use of blow-torches if necessary, along with mandatory health checks for all animals and birds.
He stated that animals should only be fed after a thorough inspection of their diet, and to ensure complete safety compliance, staff duties in enclosures should be determined based on risk levels. Adityanath also directed that zoo personnel be trained to detect bird flu, scientifically known as avian influenza, and be equipped with PPE kits and safety gear.
Additionally, the health department has been tasked with studying the potential effects of bird flu on humans and preparing a report to prevent the spread of infection among the general public. Adityanath instructed continuous coordination with the Central Zoo Authority, National Center for Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Fisheries and Dairy Department, and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (Bareilly) to ensure timely implementation of their recommendations.
