Uttar Pradesh Hockey Shines with Sub Junior Men's Gold at National Championship
Uttar Pradesh Hockey's Remarkable Achievement
Uttar Pradesh Hockey has proven its mettle at the State National Championships, recently showcasing its grassroots strength as the Sub Junior Men's team secured the Gold medal at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Men's National Championship 2026 held in Rajgir, Bihar earlier this month. This victory highlights the effectiveness of the state's grassroots system, which is supported by district-level scouting through various tournaments and academies.
Sustained Success Driven by Grassroots Development
For the past 16 years, Uttar Pradesh's well-structured grassroots and academy-focused development approach has led to remarkable success at the Hockey India National Championships, amassing a total of 21 medals across different categories. Notably, 15 of these medals have been won since 2021, as reported in a recent press release.
Medal Achievements Across Various Levels
This solid foundation has been crucial for improved performances at all levels. The Sub Junior Men's team has earned 8 medals since 2018, including 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze, with the latest title win. The Sub Junior Women's team has also secured 3 Bronze medals in 2017, 2021, and 2022. Additionally, the Junior Men's team has claimed 4 medals since 2019 (2 Gold, 2 Silver), while the Junior Women's team added a Bronze in 2025. The Senior Men's team has a Bronze from 2014, along with Silver medals in 2015 and 2021, and consecutive Bronze medals in 2024 and 2025, reflecting a consistent upward trajectory in grassroots success.
Infrastructure Development Enhancing Talent
This growth in performance coincides with significant infrastructure advancements, as over 15 astroturf fields have been established across the state in recent years, including locations like Lucknow, Rampur, Jhansi, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Mau, Saifai, Kanpur, and Agra. These world-class facilities are essential for nurturing talent throughout the state. Plans are also in place to develop additional astroturf fields, further enhancing access and strengthening the grassroots development ecosystem.
Pathway from Grassroots to International Representation
The effectiveness of the grassroots structure is evident in the number of players who have represented India on the international stage. Notable athletes include Arjuna Awardee Lalit Upadhyay, who won bronze at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics, Raj Kumar Pal (2024 Olympics), Uttam Singh, and Mumtaz Khan. Additionally, Amir Ali, Sharda Nand Tiwari, Sourabh Anand, and Ajeet Yadav played pivotal roles in India's third-place finish at the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025.
Honoring a Rich Hockey Heritage
Uttar Pradesh has a rich hockey heritage, being the birthplace of legends such as Major Dhyan Chand, two-time Olympic Gold medallist Kunwar Digvijay Singh, Mohammed Shahid, Ravinder Pal Singh, and Zafar Iqbal, who was part of the Gold Medal-winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Zafar Iqbal, a former Chief National Coach, led India to an Asian Games Silver in 1994 and was recently honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025 for his contributions to Indian hockey, continuing to inspire future generations.
Vision for Future Development
R.P. Singh, President of Uttar Pradesh Hockey, reflected on the sport's development in the state, stating, "Our achievement of 21 medals over the past 16 years showcases the strength of our grassroots structure and the dedication of our coaches in scouting and nurturing talent at our high-performance academies. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our team, including Paul Devendar, Akram Mahmood, Upendra Chauhan, Chandan Singh, Ayush Dwivedi, Jitendra Singh Bhadauria, Shashi Navait, and General Secretary Rajnish Mishra.
