Uttar Pradesh Government Takes Action Amid Severe Heatwave
Government Response to Heatwave
In light of the extreme heat conditions, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh has ordered immediate measures for relief and rescue operations. He instructed district magistrates, health and electricity departments, as well as relief agencies to maintain a high level of alertness. During a review of the situation, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for senior officials to closely monitor the functioning of hospitals, drinking water distribution, and electricity supply systems. He also stressed the importance of ensuring adequate medical facilities in government hospitals, particularly for patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.
Public Advisory on Heat Safety
The Chief Minister urged the public to remain vigilant against the severe heat. He advised citizens to pay special attention to children and the elderly, recommending the wearing of loose cotton or khadi clothing to mitigate heat exposure. Additionally, he warned against any negligence that could lead to accidental fires during this dry spell. Officials were also directed to focus on outdoor workers and ensure they are protected from fatigue, dehydration, and heat-related ailments.
Weather Forecast and Relief Expected
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a change in weather conditions across northwestern India. The arrival of a western disturbance and easterly winds is expected to improve the heat situation over the next three days. Warnings for thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail have also been issued for several regions. According to the IMD, maximum temperatures, which have been hovering around 45 degrees Celsius or higher, are likely to drop significantly between May 28 and 30, providing relief to many northern and central states.
Expert Insights on Temperature Trends
Speaking to a news media outlet on Thursday, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava noted that maximum temperatures in northwestern India have predominantly remained at or above 45 degrees Celsius. He indicated that their forecast suggests that, due to the influence of the western disturbance and the arrival of easterly winds in the plains of northwestern India, there is a likelihood of thunderstorms in the western Himalayan region and surrounding plains.
