Uttar Pradesh Government Reinforces Law and Order with Police Recruitment Initiatives
Strengthening Law and Order in Uttar Pradesh
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has reiterated his government's stance on crime and law enforcement. Defending the police's use of force against criminals, he stated that if criminals have the freedom to shoot, then the police also have the right to respond under the law. He emphasized that police are armed to confront criminals and uphold the law, noting that sometimes, criminals must be addressed in a language they understand.
Reflecting on the situation since 2017, the Chief Minister mentioned that restoring public trust in law enforcement was a significant challenge at that time. He pointed out that criminals previously mocked the law, causing difficulties for ordinary citizens. Upon assuming responsibility for the state, his primary goal was to strengthen law and order. This led to the adoption of a zero-tolerance policy, placing the law above all and making no exceptions. He also stated that even those close to him would face consequences for wrongdoing.
Progress in Law Enforcement
The Chief Minister acknowledged that establishing fear of the law initially was not easy, but consistent actions and a firm approach within legal boundaries have changed the situation. He claimed that over the past nine years, major festivals have been celebrated peacefully, with a reduction in riots, extortion, and chaos, positioning the state as an attractive destination for investment. Uttar Pradesh is striving to move beyond its image of riots and disorder towards development.
In a significant move to strengthen the police force, the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board has announced the dates for written examinations for direct recruitment to the positions of Constable and equivalent roles in 2025. The exams will take place on June 8, 9, and 10, with two sessions each day. This recruitment drive aims to fill a total of 32,679 positions, with all details regarding exam centers, admit cards, and guidelines to be published on the board's official website.
Age Relaxation for Candidates
To provide relief to candidates, the government has granted a one-time age relaxation of three years. This decision was made under the age relaxation rules to allow younger individuals who were previously excluded due to age limits to participate. This opens up opportunities for a large number of youths to join the police service. Notably, a significant number of constables were recruited in 2024, with 20% of the positions reserved for women, reflecting an effort to increase female participation in the police force.
The Importance of Law and Order
Law and order are fundamental to the progress of any state. The government's argument that police should be empowered to tackle crime decisively is understandable. Ensuring the safety of ordinary citizens is a core duty of the state. Equally important is that every action taken is within legal standards, conducted fairly and responsibly. The fear of law is sustainable only when it is accompanied by trust in the law.
Moreover, the large-scale police recruitment and age relaxation are positive signs for the youth. This will enhance employment opportunities and strengthen the police force's capacity. However, alongside increasing numbers, training, sensitivity, and understanding of civil rights are equally crucial. The identity of a modern state is defined not just by strictness but by a just and balanced system. If stringent law enforcement, transparent recruitment, and fair policing go hand in hand, Uttar Pradesh can indeed take significant steps towards lasting peace and development.
