Celebrating a Historic Achievement

On Sunday, Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, extended his congratulations to the Indian team for their remarkable performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. The nation secured a total of 39 medals, which included 13 golds.

In a message shared on X, Adityanath referred to this achievement as a "glorious chapter" in India's sports history, commending the athletes for their outstanding efforts. He expressed, "A glorious chapter in India's sporting journey! Heartiest congratulations to our exceptional athletes for their stellar performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, winning 39 medals, including 13 Golds."

Historic Achievements Across Disciplines

The Chief Minister emphasized the historic performances of Indian athletes in various sports, including boxing, athletics, judo, and para-athletics. He stated, "From India's finest-ever performance in Boxing to historic achievements in Athletics, Judo, and Para-Athletics, our athletes have scripted many memorable firsts and brought immense pride to the nation."

Adityanath attributed this success to the robust sporting ecosystem in India, highlighting the importance of world-class infrastructure, athlete welfare, and grassroots talent identification. He remarked, "These accomplishments reflect the transformative sporting ecosystem nurtured under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi, with sustained emphasis on world-class infrastructure, athlete welfare, and identification of grassroots talent."

Acknowledging the Contributors

The Chief Minister also took a moment to congratulate the athletes, coaches, and support staff for their invaluable contributions. He noted, "Congratulations to every athlete, coach, and member of the support staff. Your discipline, determination, and dedication will inspire generations. Jai Hind!"

Looking Ahead to the 2030 Commonwealth Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition in 2030.

Scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, this event will mark India as the second country, after Australia, to host the multi-sport event more than once, having previously held it in New Delhi in 2010.

During the handover ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

India's Medal Performance

India's performance at the Games was commendable, finishing fourth in the overall medal tally with 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. This successful campaign, although lower than the 61 medals achieved in Birmingham in 2022, is notable considering that many of those medals came from sports not included in the Glasgow program.

With a smaller contingent of 122 athletes compared to 210 in the previous Games, India still managed to maintain its fourth-place ranking while achieving a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Notably, long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to secure two medals.

Focus Shifts to Ahmedabad

With the ceremonial handover complete, all eyes are now on Ahmedabad, the host city for the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.
