USA Prepares for FIFA World Cup Match Against Australia

As the USA gears up for their FIFA World Cup match against Australia in Seattle, head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of earning the fans' trust. He highlighted that the team's discussions have revolved around the significance of representing their nation on such a prestigious platform.

Following an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match, the USA aims to secure a spot in the round of 32 with a win against Australia on Friday. The USA has participated in the FIFA World Cup 12 times, achieving their best result with a third-place finish in 1930. In their recent appearances in 2010, 2014, and 2022, they reached the round of 16.

'We Must Inspire Belief in Our Fans'

In a statement reported by FIFA's official platform, Pochettino remarked, "All my discussions with the team in recent weeks have focused on what it means to be here, particularly in terms of shifting the team's mindset. We need to inspire belief in us among the fans; that is crucial."

Pochettino on Football's Growth in the USA and Messi

The coach expressed his ambitious vision for the team, acknowledging the significance of the World Cup to American fans and the evolving perception of football in the country. He noted, "Many individuals are contributing to the growth of football in the USA. I believe our players are pivotal in this, along with those joining Major League Soccer, like Leo Messi."

Pochettino also extended his best wishes to Messi, following news about his father Jorge's health issues. He praised Messi as "the best without any doubt," adding, "Argentina boasts a remarkable squad, an excellent manager, and passionate fans. My thoughts are with Leo's family during this challenging time."

McKennie: 'We Are Key to Football's Growth'

Weston McKennie, a midfielder for both the USA and Juventus, shared that many fans attended the opening match not only out of love for football but also because it was their first experience in a stadium.

"The stadium was filled during our first match—some came for their love of football, while for others, it was their first match experience. I hope our performance resonated with them," he stated.

"We recognize our responsibility in promoting this sport in America. The support from fans, hearing the national anthem, and knowing they are behind us motivates us. Even when fatigue sets in, their cheers for a tackle or a play ignite our adrenaline," he concluded.
