US Vice President JD Vance Initiates Nuclear Negotiations with Iran in Switzerland
Negotiations Begin in Switzerland
Geneva: US Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Switzerland to commence discussions with Iranian officials. These negotiations, scheduled for today, aim to address the limitations of Tehran's nuclear program and to enhance the fragile interim agreement aimed at ending ongoing conflicts. As reported by Axios, the US hopes to conclude this initial round by inviting UN inspectors to assess Iran's nuclear sites, including those previously targeted by US and Israeli strikes last June.
In exchange, Washington is considering the release of $6 billion, the first installment of Iran's frozen assets held in Qatar, which is expected to be allocated for humanitarian needs. The framework for these talks was established last week, and US and Iranian negotiators now have a 60-day window to finalize the technical aspects of the agreement. However, recent Israeli military actions in Lebanon could jeopardize the US-Iran negotiations, as Tehran has insisted that any ceasefire must also halt Israeli bombings targeting the Iranian-supported group Hezbollah.
Iran's delegation includes parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, along with officials from the central bank and oil sectors. The US team features Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the discussions will involve Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, alongside mediators from Qatar.
Before departing for Switzerland, Vance expressed optimism about the upcoming technical discussions, stating, "I'm looking forward to starting the technical talks with the Iranians, the Pakistanis, and the Qataris... We're going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue and make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue; those are the two big things that I think we're going to be focused on." He also acknowledged that the Iranians would likely have their own concerns to address during the talks.
The negotiations are set to occur at the Burgenstock ski resort on Sunday.
