US Troop Deployment Raises Tensions Over Iran's Kharg Island
Escalating Conflict in the Middle East
The situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly tense as the United States prepares to send additional troops to the area, sparking concerns about a potential ground offensive against Iran. A report indicates that the Pentagon is set to deploy approximately 3,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. This follows the earlier deployment of thousands of Marines, leading to speculation about a possible attack on Kharg Island, a crucial economic asset for Iran located near its coastline.
Strategic Significance of Kharg Island
Kharg Island is vital for Iran, handling around 90% of its crude oil exports. Control over this island could severely impact Iran's economy. The island spans five miles and is described by US officials as the central hub for Iranian oil supply. Although alternative routes exist to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, they have not been extensively tested, according to the International Energy Agency. For instance, the Jask oil terminal, inaugurated in 2021, was intended to facilitate oil transport to the Gulf of Oman, but it is not yet a reliable option for Iranian crude exports.
Currently, Kharg Island has a storage capacity of about 30 million barrels, with approximately 8 million barrels stored there, as reported by trade intelligence firm Kpler.
Challenges of a US Attack
Recently, the US has deployed two Marine Expeditionary Units, which specialize in rapid-response operations. However, any US forces would need to navigate through the Strait of Hormuz, which is controlled by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This presents a significant risk, as Iranian forces could target US naval vessels in the area.
Iran's Strong Response
Iran's Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, issued a stern warning to the US, stating that all enemy movements are closely monitored by Iranian armed forces. He emphasized that any aggressive actions would lead to retaliation against critical infrastructure in the region. Iran's Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Agharchi, also warned that any confrontation with US troops would result in disastrous consequences for the US.
In a recent statement, Agharchi asserted that Iran is prepared for any scenario, including a ground invasion, and is ready to confront US forces if necessary.
Recent US Military Actions
Earlier this month, former President Trump claimed that the US had conducted significant bombing operations on Kharg Island, targeting military installations while sparing oil infrastructure. He warned that any interference with the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz would prompt a reassessment of this approach.
The ongoing conflict, which began on February 28 following joint US and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran, has now reached its 28th day. Trump has postponed strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure and extended the deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz until April 6, despite Iran's denial of his claims regarding negotiations.
Iran has begun to enforce stricter controls over the Strait of Hormuz, requiring vessels to provide detailed information and, in some cases, pay for passage through the strait.
