US State Department Halts NYC Meeting with Iranian UN Ambassador
Cancellation of Meeting with Iranian Ambassador
A scheduled meeting between a high-ranking official from New York City and Iran's UN ambassador was abruptly cancelled following intervention from the US State Department, as reported by various media outlets. Ana María Archila, who serves as the commissioner for the Office of International Affairs under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was set to meet with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the UN, on Tuesday, according to City Journal. A US official confirmed to a digital news outlet that the meeting had indeed been planned.
Once the State Department learned of the meeting, it was promptly called off. Officials from the State Department subsequently met with representatives from the mayor's office to discuss what they termed appropriate diplomatic conduct. The Office of International Affairs collaborates closely with the State Department on matters related to diplomacy, given that New York City is home to the United Nations.

On Friday, Mayor Mamdani confirmed that the meeting had not occurred and would not proceed. He stated, "That meeting did not take place, it will not take place, and I was unaware of it until a press inquiry was made." When questioned about his stance on such a meeting, Mamdani reiterated, "I've indicated that this meeting will not happen. Thank you all very much." A State Department official expressed approval of the cancellation, stating, "We appreciate the mayor's understanding of diplomatic values and his choice to cancel this meeting." The official added, "It is unacceptable for a New York City official to even contemplate meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to the UN, who consistently undermines US interests and attempts to obscure his regime's actions against the United States, its allies, and the citizens of Iran."
This intervention occurs amidst rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. Former President Trump has frequently claimed he is at the top of Iran's "kill list." Additionally, reports indicate that Israel recently provided Trump with intelligence regarding a purported Iranian assassination plot. This proposed meeting marks the second instance in recent weeks where the Trump administration has intervened regarding interactions between the Mamdani administration and foreign leaders. In June, it was reported that a planned meeting between Mamdani and Colombian President Gustavo Petro was also cancelled due to State Department objections.
Archila, who previously co-directed New York's Working Families Party, was appointed as commissioner after an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2022. She gained national attention in 2018 when she confronted then-Senator Jeff Flake over his decision to support Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court, identifying herself as a survivor of sexual assault and questioning his judgment in light of allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford, which Kavanaugh denied.
