Strategic Fallout from the Incident

A group of former Indian military officials, diplomats, and analysts have labeled the recent sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka as a significant strategic setback for India, questioning its regional credibility.

The IRIS Dena was struck in international waters, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 87 lives, with 61 individuals still unaccounted for. The Sri Lankan Navy successfully rescued 32 crew members.

The US Department of War confirmed the attack and shared footage showing the torpedo hitting the frigate, leading to a massive explosion.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, condemned the attack, stating that the warship was a 'guest of India's Navy' and warned that the US would regret this action.

As of now, the Indian government has not issued any official statement regarding the incident.

Calls for Response from India

Former Indian Navy chief Arun Prakash expressed that New Delhi should communicate its serious concerns over the incident, emphasizing that such military actions should not occur without India's prior knowledge.

He described the conflict as unnecessary and likely to cause widespread suffering, urging for an immediate cessation of hostilities to keep the conflict away from Indian waters.

Sushant Singh, a former Army officer and academic, remarked that the sinking of the IRIS Dena shortly after departing Indian waters severely undermines New Delhi's regional standing.

He suggested that the US acted without consulting the Modi government, expanding the conflict zone without warning.

Singh highlighted that while the Iranian vessel was in international waters, it was returning from an Indian naval event, which complicates the situation further.

International Implications and Reactions

The Iranian warship had participated in the International Fleet Review held in Vishakhapatnam, where it docked alongside vessels from various nations.

Analysts questioned whether the US would have taken similar action against a Chinese ship, suggesting a double standard in international relations.

Former diplomat Kanwal Sibal criticized the US for disregarding India's sensitivities, noting that the Iranian ship was in the area due to an invitation from India.

He emphasized that the ship was unarmed during the incident, calling for condolences from the Indian Navy for the loss of life.

Political Repercussions in India

Strategic analyst Brahma Chellaney remarked that the sinking of the IRIS Dena represents a significant embarrassment for India, raising questions about its authority in the Indian Ocean region.

He pointed out that the US's actions have undermined India's image as a security partner in the region.

The opposition has also voiced criticism, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighting the lack of response from Prime Minister Modi, calling for strong leadership during such crises.

Pawan Khera, another Congress member, questioned India's influence in its neighborhood, suggesting that it may have been ceded to foreign powers.

Supriya Shrinate shared a video of the Iranian crew at the Indian event, emphasizing their status as guests and condemning the US attack.
