Overview of the Rescue Mission

The United States executed a complex rescue operation involving numerous aircraft and a significant number of personnel to save a two-man crew from a fighter jet that had crashed in Iran. Recent reports indicate that special operations forces played a crucial role in this mission. According to a US official who requested anonymity, these operators were integral to the teams tasked with retrieving the pilot and the weapons systems officer from the downed aircraft.

During a press briefing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the performance of the special operators, pilots, and support teams, stating they executed their duties with exceptional skill under challenging conditions. However, he refrained from confirming whether US troops had actually entered Iranian territory. Both Hegseth and President Donald Trump have indicated that while they have not dismissed the possibility of deploying ground troops, they maintain that the operation's scope remains limited.

Trump elaborated on the rescue, revealing that US forces managed to locate and extract the pilot within hours of the F-15E Strike Eagle's crash late Thursday. This involved deploying helicopters, midair refuelers, and fighter jets deep into Iranian airspace. The second crew member, the weapons systems officer, was rescued nearly two days later. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump noted, "This marks the first instance in military history where two US pilots have been rescued separately from deep within enemy territory. WE WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN WARFIGHTER BEHIND!"

During the press conference, Trump inquired about the number of personnel involved in the operation, to which General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, hesitated to provide specifics, ultimately stating, "I’d love to keep that a secret, Mr. President." Trump responded, "I will keep the exact number confidential, but it was in the hundreds."
