US Intelligence Raises Concerns Over Netanyahu's Actions Amid Iran Peace Deal
Concerns Over Israeli Actions
Intelligence agencies in the United States have alerted the Trump administration about potential actions by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that could jeopardize the recently established peace agreement with Iran. This warning comes even as Trump publicly commended Netanyahu, labeling him a "warrior prime minister" and asserting that he continues to wield considerable influence over Israel's military strategies.
A report from a major news outlet, referencing both current and former US officials, suggests that Israel is intent on persisting with military operations against Hezbollah and exerting pressure on Iran, irrespective of the stipulations outlined in the Trump-supported peace memorandum. This intelligence alert emerges amidst mounting political challenges for Netanyahu as national elections approach later this year.
According to US officials mentioned in the report, Netanyahu's political future increasingly hinges on demonstrating strength domestically, which includes maintaining Israeli military presence in Lebanon and adopting a tough stance against Hezbollah. The report also highlighted dissatisfaction among Israeli leaders regarding certain aspects of the Trump peace agreement, which they perceive as constraining Israel's broader goal of applying maximum pressure on Iran.
Trump's Support for Netanyahu
'Bibi is a warrior PM': Trump
Despite indications of tension between Washington and Jerusalem, Trump expressed his support for Netanyahu during a recent event near Washington, where he unveiled a new Air Force One aircraft provided by Qatar. "We have fought alongside Israel effectively, and our relationship has been strong. Bibi Netanyahu is indeed a warrior prime minister, and he deserves recognition for that," Trump stated, referencing the US-Israeli military operations against Iran that commenced on February 28.
In a different interview with a media outlet, Trump characterized his relationship with Netanyahu as robust yet closely monitored. "It's good, but we need to keep him somewhat grounded," Trump remarked, adding that he believes he can influence Israeli military actions in the region. When asked if he could deter potential Israeli strikes in Lebanon, Trump responded affirmatively, stating, "Yes, I will be. They hold me in high regard, and they follow my lead." The Iran-US agreement, which revolves around 14 key points, includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a commitment from Iran to never develop nuclear weapons, a $300 billion plan for Iran's reconstruction, and the lifting of all sanctions on Iran by the US.
