US Gulf: A New Frontier for Energy Supply

US Gulf Emerges as New Energy Hub Amid Iran-US Tensions

Washington: The Strait of Hormuz remains blocked amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. While Iran has permitted friendly nations to navigate through, the oil supply has not resumed as before. In the meantime, the US is making significant moves regarding the Gulf of Mexico.

Reports suggest plans to transform this area into a second Middle East, facilitating the distribution of LPG and petrol globally. This route is expected to be the most accessible and cost-effective for India. It is claimed that major businessmen are already investing heavily in this Gulf region.

Oil Companies Line Up
The world's largest energy firms are queuing up to acquire substantial stakes in the US's ultra-deepwater project. Major European companies like TotalEnergies and Shell, along with BP from London and Repsol from Spain, are also in the race.

The current owners of the 'Shenandoah' field are set to sell their 51% stake, with bids expected in the coming weeks. Sources indicate that significant oil producers from the Middle East and Asia may also join this competition, potentially opening a new avenue for oil and LPG supply to India.

How Much Oil Will Be Extracted?
This is no ordinary oil field; it lies at a depth of approximately 30,000 feet beneath the ocean, presenting considerable challenges. The pressure here can reach up to 20,000 pounds per square inch. Nevertheless, production commenced in July, yielding 100,000 barrels of oil daily. Importantly, this area is far removed from conflict zones, eliminating reliance on perilous routes like Hormuz for oil supply.

Why This is a Game Changer for India
The crisis in the Middle East has alarmed the global community. Amidst the maritime blockade in Hormuz, this US region is emerging as a new oil hub. When tensions in the Middle East drive prices up, increased production from the US will help stabilize the market. With India's rapidly growing economy requiring substantial fuel supplies, including LPG and petrol, a stable supply from a country like the US could be the key to India's energy security.
