US Deportations of Indians Surge: Over 18,000 Since 2009
Overview of Deportations
Since 2009, the United States has deported a total of 18,822 Indian nationals, with 3,258 deported just in the year 2025, as reported by the Union government on Thursday.
In 2024 alone, over 1,360 Indians faced deportation, while 617 were sent back in 2023, according to the Ministry of External Affairs during a parliamentary session.
As of November 28, 2025, approximately 2,000 individuals were deported via commercial flights, with the remainder transported on charter flights managed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement or US Customs and Border Protection.
The deportation process includes a strict verification of the individuals' Indian citizenship, as stated by the ministry.
Concerns Raised by Indian Government
In response to inquiries in the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that the Indian government has formally expressed its concerns to Washington regarding the treatment of deportees, particularly highlighting the use of shackles on women and children.
Jaishankar noted that there have been no complaints regarding the treatment of women and children since February 5.
Changes in US Immigration Policy
Since the beginning of 2025, the Trump administration has implemented stricter immigration policies and increased efforts to deport undocumented migrants. In certain instances, military aircraft have been utilized for the repatriation of these individuals.
The Narendra Modi government faced criticism from the Opposition after videos surfaced showing Indian deportees being shackled on US military flights. However, Jaishankar clarified on February 6 that this practice aligns with established procedures.
Criminal Deportations
On Thursday, Jaishankar revealed that among those deported were wanted criminals and gangsters implicated in serious crimes such as terrorism and homicide. Notable deportees included fugitives like Lakhwinder Singh and Anmol Bishnoi.
