Srinagar, Aug 19: The United States is considering a revision of its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, as stated by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. He noted that both the central government and the Union Territory administration have implemented measures to enhance safety in the region.

During a joint press conference with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, Gor emphasized the significance of J&K to India and remarked on the region's improved security, which may lead to a reassessment of the travel warning issued by Washington.

“J&K is a vital part of India, and it boasts incredible natural beauty. I am delighted to be here and experience this region,” Gor expressed after his meeting with Abdullah.

He mentioned that the US routinely reviews its travel advisories and hinted that the warning for J&K might be reconsidered. “The United States issues travel warnings and periodically reassesses them. While I cannot announce any major changes today, it is certainly something we will evaluate,” Gor stated.

Gor indicated that the US would determine if the current travel advisory should be downgraded, highlighting the area's tourism potential and scenic landscapes. “We will consider whether the travel warning currently in place should be adjusted, as this is a stunning region. I believe many Americans would appreciate visiting and experiencing its beauty and opportunities,” he added.

Strengthening India-US Relations

Focus on India-US ties, J&K

Gor's visit to Srinagar is part of a two-day trip to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He met with Abdullah shortly after his arrival at the Chief Minister's residence.

Following their discussion, Gor characterized the meeting as warm and productive, noting that both parties had identified topics for further discussion in Washington and New Delhi. “I am excited to be here. We had a very constructive meeting and have follow-up points to take back to Washington and Delhi. It was a cordial interaction, and we look forward to advancing this relationship,” he remarked.

Abdullah highlighted that their discussions focused on enhancing India-US relations, particularly regarding how the US could strengthen its engagement with Jammu and Kashmir. “It was a fruitful meeting where we discussed the bilateral relations, specifically what the US can do for Jammu and Kashmir,” he stated.

He acknowledged the presence of “certain legacy issues” that would require time to address but expressed optimism about future engagement. “There are indeed legacy issues that we will work on over time. However, I am hopeful about progressing this dialogue. This conversation will continue between Ambassador Gor and Washington, as well as between myself and the Government of India in New Delhi,” Abdullah noted.

He expressed confidence that the relationship between the United States and Jammu and Kashmir would “expand and deepen in the coming years.”

Gor is expected to visit Ladakh on Thursday as part of his itinerary.
