US-Iran Relations and Nuclear Concerns

During a recent event at Citi's 2026 India Conference in Mumbai, the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, asserted that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, labeling this a "red line" for the United States. His comments come amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, as both nations navigate a complex diplomatic and military landscape in West Asia.

Gor criticized Iran for its actions in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that US President Donald Trump does not allow any nation to hold the world at ransom. He pointed out that following military strikes by the US and Israel against Iran over three months ago, the Islamic Republic retaliated by targeting its neighboring countries, including Gulf states such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.

He condemned Iran's aggressive moves against Azerbaijan and Turkey, describing them as "extremely reckless." Gor warned that the consequences could be dire if Iran were to use nuclear weapons, reiterating that the US's firm stance is that Iran will not be permitted to develop such capabilities.

The ongoing nuclear negotiations remain stalled, primarily due to Iran's nuclear program, which is a significant point of contention. The crisis in West Asia escalated on February 28, following a coordinated attack by the US and Israel on Iranian targets. Gor highlighted the energy crisis exacerbated by the conflict, stating that Iran is the sole nation obstructing the Strait of Hormuz, thereby jeopardizing international shipping and holding the global community hostage.

He remarked, "These waters are international, and the vessels navigating them are unrelated to this conflict." (With agency inputs)
