Delay in Uruguay's Departure for World Cup Opener

Uruguay's journey to the United States for their FIFA World Cup match against Saudi Arabia was postponed on Sunday due to a documentation error, as reported by a news agency.

The flight was held up for several hours because the necessary paperwork required by FIFA was not prepared in time for departure. Uruguay, who have won the World Cup twice, are based in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, and were set to fly to Miami for their Group H match against Saudi Arabia, scheduled for Monday at Hard Rock Stadium.

Following Saudi Arabia, Uruguay will face Cape Verde, who are making their World Cup debut on June 21, and the 2010 champions, Spain, on June 26 in Zapopan, Mexico. This delay may also lead to the cancellation of the pre-match press conference featuring coach Marcelo Bielsa and captain Jose Maria Gimenez. As of now, neither the Uruguay Football Association nor FIFA has issued a statement regarding the situation.

Uruguay's World Cup Legacy

Uruguay made history by winning the first-ever World Cup in 1930 and again in 1950. However, their performance in recent tournaments has been inconsistent. This century, they have experienced two group stage exits in 2002 and 2022, a fourth-place finish in 2010, failed to qualify in 2006, and reached the round of 16 in 2014, followed by a quarterfinal finish in 2018.

Iran's Arrival in the US for World Cup Match

In another development, Iran's national football team has arrived in the United States, landing at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday ahead of their World Cup opener against New Zealand, which is also scheduled for Monday.

The Iranian team received a warm farewell from fans as they departed from their training camp in Tijuana. Supporters gathered outside the team's hotel, chanting 'Team Melli' (meaning 'national team' in Persian) as players made their way to the bus.
